I've been using this app for years now, but it's been a while since I've used it for leasurely reading. The past two years has found me using it more often for grad school. If required books for my courses were available on Kindle and had corresponding page numbers, it was typically more cost effective, easier to organize notes, and allowed me to easily read and take notes anywhere.
I do wish there were some more features, particularly when it comes to exporting highlights and notes. I wish that, just as we can filter our highlights and notes in the app, we could do the same when exporting highlights and notes. For example, if I only wanted to export the highlights and notes that I starred rather than every highlight and note, then I could do so by applying a filter.
That way I could export the notes I know I need and found to be highly applicable and important to my work at the time, while still keeping the entirety of my highlights and notes on the app in the event that I need to export all of them in the future. I also wish that you could do more formatting with any notes that you take.
With no input from me whatsoever, the pages jumped forwards or backwards by pages. Then I would have to go back and find the page I was on. Clicking to find the page would also result in it going much further than I intended it to. Then sometimes that would go too far. When I ordered another book, this time on Python, it was the same wretched experience. I gave up on it a few times, then came back because I already paid for the book and was determined to get through it.
I love Kindle and Audible and I hate to give it a bad review but on Mac, this app is garbage. The following data may be collected and linked to your identity:. Description The Kindle app gives users the ability to read eBooks on a beautiful, easy-to-use interface.
It's also waterproof with an IPX8 rating —standard for Paperwhites, but a first for kids. We didn't test the new Kids model, but we did try the Signature Edition and are confident this one will hold up too. You can access the same platform across other Amazon devices too, if you have a Fire Tablet or an Echo.
It also comes with a case and a two-year no-questions-asked replacement guarantee. If your kid smashes it just once, you get your money back. If you're going to get your kid an entertainment device, an ebook reader that doesn't have a browser or access to social media is probably as safe as you can get.
We think it's still a fine Kindle for kids to enjoy. If you already own this model, you don't have to rush to upgrade. Have a pal who's ready to give up their Kindle? It may work fine for you. If you're buying a sixth-generation Kindle Paperwhite or newer, it's probably still working fine, albeit without as many bells and whistles.
You'll get fewer pixels, and it may lack Bluetooth for audiobooks or any semblance of waterproofing, but older Kindles generally hold up well for reading. Even used or refurbished models are fine, but you probably don't want to spend much on them. You can browse Amazon's certified refurbished Kindles, but there aren't many older and cheap versions anymore.
As a general rule, if there are buttons on the front of a Kindle other than the new Oasis or a keyboard, don't shell out money for it. It may still work, but you're going to enjoy the experience much more with a newer device.
Your ebook collection with Amazon is saved in the cloud and accessible from any tablet, phone, or Kindle. If you do get your hands on an older, nonworking one, you can trade it in for credit toward a newer model. You may be surprised at the cost of some Kindle books I was , but there are ways to save some money while reading as much as your heart desires.
You can only choose from the Unlimited catalog, but there are millions of titles there, including audiobooks and magazines. There's a day free trial you should take advantage of. If you already pay for a Prime account, you're eligible for some free books through Prime Reading. There are not as many options as with Kindle Unlimited, and in a lot of cases you'll see both Unlimited and Prime options lumped together, so you'll have to look closely to find the free ones.
But it's still something, and there are even some magazines included, like Men's Health and Cosmopolitan. But if you don't want another monthly subscription and don't want to continue giving your money to Amazon, take advantage of ebooks available with your library card. Browsing a digital catalog is not as magical as spending an afternoon looking over every shelf in a library, but such is the ebook life no one says you can't read both!
We have a detailed how-to on this that you should check out, but here are some of the takeaways:. If you know someone else with a Kindle, you two can lend some books between your libraries, just as you would with a physical copy. Follow these instructions from Amazon to do so, and keep in mind not all books can be loaned.
Kindles have helpful features that you may want to take advantage of it. Long-press a word or phrase to see its definition , highlight it, or take notes. You can also search the entire book for that particular word or phrase or translate it to or from other languages. Word Wise shows short definitions in small text within the lines. Unfortunately, it's not available for all books, but when it is you can turn it on or off and choose more and fewer hints.
Clicking the short definition opens a longer one from Word Wise and the New Oxford American Dictionary or Oxford Dictionary of English you can switch between the two , plus translations, and a Wikipedia page, if applicable. You can control margin sizes and line spacing from that menu too. It will also read a book aloud, though it doesn't sound nearly as nice as an audiobook does.
If you have a Goodreads account, you can review the Kindle books you've read or browse your bookshelf and recommendations. Long-pressing a word or phrase, in addition to what is mentioned above, opens up an option to share quotes directly to Goodreads. It's not the best so I'd reserve it for emergency searches.

What once was simple as reading a page-turner is now not so easy. We've reviewed all the major Kindles and e-readers for years, and our favorite e-reader and best Kindle overall is the basic Kindle Paperwhite. Truly the ideal model for most, it has a bigger and better display than before, plus USB-C charging and longer battery life. Things get complicated. We've even examined competitors trying to take Amazon's throne none have made much of a dent.
Yes, while Amazon's Kindles own the market, other do try and compete. Amazon wasn't the first company to release an E Ink e-reader that was Sony, which launched the Librie in , but when the first Kindle was released in , it sold out in five hours. That initial success was likely due to Amazon's huge library of e-content. We keep raving to folks looking for a good read to check out Mox, the memoir novel of pro wrestler Jon Moxley. It's a series of short-burts of writing telling the athlete's story of going from bring broke to working on the biggest stage in his industry completely out of order, and it somehow works.
Also, check out A Certain Hunger, provided you're adult enough to take on its unique tale of cannibalism. Debut novelist Chelsea G. Summers has wowed readers and critics with this fantastic tale of Dorothy Daniels, a food critic whose taste for lovers takes place in the bedroom and the kitchen.
We've pulled together the best e-book reader apps for those who want to read on more than just an e-reader though these screens are easier on your eyes. And for your Kindle? Check out our tips for how to get free ebooks. The best Kindle overall is the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, and it's right for most users, without a doubt.
It's basically the Goldilocks pick: it's not too expensive, and not too sparse with features, and gives you most everything you could ask for in a Kindle, in the design most people like. We would love the Paperwhite if it were a little more affordable, but it's plain to see that it's the optimal device for reading in any condition. No matter if your vacation is in the sun or shade, or if you're just on a day trip at the beach, or consuming a gripping page-turner in the bath — it's a great way to devour a new book, or re-read a favorite.
Small changes lead to great products staying great, and such is the case with the new Kindle Paperwhite It's got the same basic look as previous Kindles and Kindle Paperwhite models, a matte black shell and an e-ink screen, but this time it's larger, with a 6. The bezels are also smaller, so the device didn't have to grow too much to accommodate the growth from a 6-inch panel. While it's still a super-sharp ppi display, it's now supported by an array of 17 LED backlights, for incredibly even lighting.
And it's still got a great waterproofing IPX8-rated protection. It's a welcome change if only for the reversible port. Faster charging doesn't appear to be on the table, but the microUSB port has been around for way too long, and is often fragile, so we're happy to see it go. That said, it's gained one of the Oasis' once unique features: display warmth.
Our testing of the Paperwhite 's waterproofing included a 20 minute bath in our sink. It worked just as well as it did before when we took it out. Read our full Amazon Kindle Paperwhite review. Rather spend your money on more books? This E Ink device is lightweight and easy to use for hours, and its chassis is no weaker than that of our top pick, the Paperwhite. The regular Kindle also has a touch-screen display, and those ensconced in the Amazon ecosystem can benefit from Goodreads integration and FreeTime Unlimited.
The Kindle's front-facing lighting finally brings it closer to parity with the Paperwhite. We're guessing most bookworms also like to read in the dark and may not want to disturb a sleeping partner by turning on a bedroom light. Overall, this is the best Kindle for those on a budget, as well as those voracious readers who would rather spend on books themselves, and not hardware. Now that some folks are moving from physical books, these things don't grow on trees anymore. Read our full Amazon Kindle review.
Kids will like it for the colored cases, while parents will love Amazon's 2-year no-questions-asked warranty. Even better, there are no lock screen ads. In fact, the Kids Edition is so close to our ideal Kindle interface, we wish Amazon would offer it as a mode for adults who just want to read the book, and not dabble in the Goodreads community.
Otherwise, the Kindle Kids Edition is the same tablet as the Kindle. You get the same 6-inch, ppi display and front lighting, and the display is still inset, not flush with the frame. Read our full Amazon Kindle Kids Edition review. What if you're tired of small, incremental change? It's got the same 6. But there's more on top. The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition can be charged via Qi-based wireless chargers, plus its backlighting is automatically-adjusting.
Plus, 4x as much storage and no on-screen ads. Not all of those features may be huge for everyone, but we're betting at least one is interesting for all. It's sitting right between the normal Paperwhite and the Oasis, and a good option if you have the money. The new Kindle Oasis still offers Amazon's most luxurious reading experience, with its machined aluminum back, larger screen, physical buttons, automatic lighting adjustments and very well-lit screen using 25 LEDs — screams "first class.
The device also supports Audible's audiobooks, as long as you've got a Bluetooth device handy. The Oasis's curved back and physical buttons give you an easier way to get a grip and a way to read your book without tapping the screen.
While the Oasis is the best Kindle for those who can splurge, we just wish it didn't cost nearly twice as much as the Kindle Paperwhite. It's the Kindle with more effort put into its design, losing the simple and utilitarian aesthetic of the regular Kindle and the Paperwhite.
Read our full Amazon Kindle Oasis review. Amazon doesn't run the whole e-reader world, so we occasionally test competitors' e-readers. And while the Nook Glowlight 4 isn't better than any Kindle, it's got minor tweaks and updates that give us reason to give it some attention here. One of its best features is it's no-fuss reading interface, which gets out of your way when it's time to read Amazon could do this, and we wish it would. Oh, and loading up library books, proved to be a frustrating process.
