At a nearly 4k price point with an insurance plan I expected it to be better. It constantly runs at high temps when utilizing the gpu but still functions. The high temps have caused an aesthetic hinge cover to come loose, but still functional, the 4k screen seems to be slowly warping upwards on that side because of it. The battery life with the 4k screen is longer than normal but that still isn't a lot of time away from a charger. The main concern is the lower casing, its too flexible and when showing work to others the touchpad isn't consistently useable due to physical issues with the bottom housing flexing from its own weight.
The whole housing should have been metal and even with the g rating, a dent in that bottom case could keep the touchpad from working forever. Repairing the hinge when contacting msi is understandably an out of warranty repair. I got this back in may. Brand new from Auth dealer. It actually was drop shipped from their distributor. It died in a week. Screen started to blink and freeze and would not boot. I did a full wipe of ssd and reinstalled windows afrer 2 tries and it died again during initial boot.
Not even sure what the issue is.

The two M. However, over here MSI still places a warranty sticker on one of the screws, so getting inside voids the warranty. The control software on the Creator series differs from the one on the MSI gaming notebooks. Before we talk about real performance in demanding loads, I do have to mention that this Creator 17 is a fine everyday laptop for multitasking, browsing, and video. The performance is thermally throttled, and you can see how it slowly degrades over the multiple runs.
Details below. With that out of the way, we then went ahead and further verified our findings with the longer Cinebench R20 loop test and the gruesome Prime 95, on the High Performance and Silent profiles. Luxmark 3. Next, we ran the entire suite of tests and benchmarks on the stock High Performance profile in Creator Center. The performance is fairly similar in short burst loads, but it degrades by a fair bit in longer-duration CPU tests.
At the same time, the fans spin at around dB at head-level, which is not bad for a performance laptop. Despite these temperatures, this Creator 17 performs fine. The CPU is slightly thermally throttled, but still runs at high frequencies, while the GPU constantly runs at its designed power of 80W.
The GPU quickly reaches 86 degrees Celsius in this case, and then it powers down to about W between the tested titles. Restarting the laptop was the only way to get it back to normal, or at least the only method that I could figure out. Hence, the findings above. MSI also chose to implement a fairly quiet fan profile for this laptop, with the fans only ramping to about dB at head-level on the High Performance profile, and sub 40 dB levels on the Balanced profile.
As for those external temperatures, this Creator 17 runs cooly with daily use, but heats-up a fair bit with games. Longer gaming sessions are mostly fine on the High Performance profile, although even in this case the chassis heats-up to almost 60 degrees around the I and O keys, but the WASD and arrows regions stay within fairly comfortable degrees.
Our sample performed well in all our tests, both near the router and slightly further away. Audio is handled by a pair of punchy speakers that fire through cuts on the underbelly. These get very loud, at about 90 dB at head-level at maximum volumes, but the quality severely lacks at the lower end.
A pair of headphones is a must with this laptop if you care about sound quality. The webcam is placed at the top of the screen flanked by microphones. Optimus helps the runtimes, but the mini LED panel will take its toll if you plan to use it at higher brightness settings. MSI pairs this configuration with a generic and fairly-compact W power-brick that weighs. The MSI Creator 17 is available from select retailers around the world in a bunch of different configurations.
So, if this sort of screen is something that you need for your work as of the summer of , well, this notebook is the one for you. At the same time, though, I feel that this is compromised in a couple of ways. Others bother me even more, such as the very poor audio and especially the fact that the thermal module can barely handle this basic hardware configuration in demanding loads, with the 8Core CPU being thermally limited in the more taxing chores.
So, is that mini LED display worth that kind of money? And if your answer is YES, is it worth it on this Creator 17? Same here 'J'. So much potential wasted here, when they could have attracted so many new customers with this new LED screen technology. Now also patiently awaiting the Thinkpad P1, P15 or even the P17 models, but they seem to be struggling with these releases.
Apple has now entered a period of uncertainty with their just announced alternative chip replacement philosophy. Onset of a 2 years in limbo, with only hardcore Apple enthusiasts possibly purchasing a current MacBook Pro Thanks UltraBookReview for conducting these extensive tests for us. You also saved me a lot of money. Hi, I own this laptop. I get this unless HDR is set to on.
But HDR set to on messes up all the colours…. In order to unlock the hidden BIOS menu and make undervolting possible, you need to press a specific keys combination which I can send it to your email address if you want I don't want to put it here publicly as I don't think MSI would approve.
Andrei Girbea. Please post it publically. I tried the combination that I know that it works in some of Gaming laptops, but it didn't work on that unit. Lastly, do you have any idea was Type C support is disabled by default? Also make sure to try it at least times, it doesn't register the combination every time I attempt it for me either. Thanks, but I no longer have the sample around.
I know this is finicky, I've experienced it on other MSI laptops in the past, but somehow it just didn't work on this sample. Anyway, I cannot retest and upload updated results. Oh, also make sure to switch to the 2nd tab in the BIOS where the advanced options are located when you attempt the combination, I'm not sure it works if you attempt it in the default tab.
Your email address will not be published. To test Photoshop performance, we use an older version v0. This comes with two main advantages. Higher scores are better. There are a few laptops out there with W RTX GPUs that could probably outpace the Creator 17 on this benchmark, but those are even thicker, heavier, and usually targeted at gamers.
Our fourth and final set of benchmarks shift over from photo to video editing, where we check to see how quickly the laptops can render and export a 4K Premiere Pro project made up of 8K Sony a1 footage. Neither computer can keep up with the fully loaded M1 Max MacBook Pro — partly because of the increased RAM, and partly because its GPU has access to all 64GB of unified memory — but the Creator 17 still manages to post the fastest render and export times we've ever clocked from a PC.
As I said at the top of this section, the performance of the Creator 17 isn't surprising Overall, these results highlight the kind of performance improvement you can expect when you upgrade from the Core i7 and RTX in the Dell to a beefier Core i9 and RTX That upgrade will cost you a chunk of change, and the benefits you see depend largely on the apps you use to edit photos and video, but hopefully tests like these can help you make a wiser buying decision when it's time to upgrade.
Performance isn't everything, and there are definitely faster PC laptops out there, but as of this writing the MSI Creator 17 is undoubtedly one of the fastest 'creator' PCs you can buy. The MSI Creator 17 is a inch creator laptop that's not afraid to lean in to that identity. It's big, bulky, and heavy, but it's also packed with ports, powerful hardware, and one of the best and brightest displays in any laptop currently on the market.
It's not a perfect laptop is there such a thing? The keyboard, trackpad, and especially the RAM accessibility could and should all be improved, and the miniLED display could do with a few more local dimming zone to decrease blooming. But in the meantime, I can confidently say that the MSI Creator 17 is one of the most powerful creator laptops on the market, and one of the very few that isn't abusing the term 'HDR' for marketing purposes.
It's a proper desktop replacement that's worthy of that 'Creator' title. Unless you get it on sale, since it has a nice graphic card for 3d. Still work great on lightroom editing and did some DaVinci resolve on it. The timeline editing wasn't as smooth so I end up just getting a PC tower a month ago. Anyways the only issue I had with my laptop MSI was the fan ball barring got noisy and I sent it in, As usual fan goes up when busy and I have a cool pad under it to help it.
They use 12th Gen cpus but drop the miniLED screens in favor of the touch screens. Do not waste your money on an 11th gen Intel processor. Laptops used to be for business sales presentations. Now, there are markets for creators and gamers and who knows who else. At least you can get to the battery with just removing the rear panel. The last 2 Asus gaming laptops I had, you even had to take the screen hinges off. Just to cut the wires to the battery and run it on mains power only.
When the battery fails after 2 years the computer becomes unstable as well. In the good old days, you could just eject the battery My days of trying to make a single laptop do everything are over. The author uses the word "but" incorrectly. Anyway since when did anyone not expect those compromises on "desktop level" laptop. Only a completely new chip architecture M1 like from intel or AMD can alleviate some of the negatives. A word to DPR: you're not doing yourself any favors contracting with shills to write articles on obsolete hardware.
The very fact that this so-called "review" doesn't even mention that is a deliberate, glaring omission. What is DL Cade's agenda? The Creator 17" mini-LED from a couple years - the microsd card slot performed poorly. VERY slow. Only uninformed photogs would consider M1 or Intel gen Two years ago, that same processing took a full minute. I did ad a second M. This reduces noise, but more importantly performance.
I was surprised to find out about this. Windows Power plans does not support above "Balanced" as a result. It's keyboard is really good, having the greater travel which I prefer versus most modern laptops. Personally wouldn't get an MSI anything as they are a pretty awful brand see reports by Gamer's Nexus etc , but this year is going to be another exciting one with lots of powerful laptops on the horizon.
This is already obsolete, 12th gen intel should be more efficient and with faster RAM. Would never waste money on this. Plus, screen blooming seems to be too strong. Yes, and the 13th gen Intel will be out as soon as the 12th gen Intel machines are actually sold on the market. Well, It's system disk.
Should edit large video files on a regular basis you may opt for external storage external SSD, dedicated server Because the Creator line had not been updated yet and many people would be ok with 11th gen performance. The price differences are not yet great so 12th gen is a better investment now.
If it were say, November maybe, but not today. Should it not show that it has the unified memory? But, you know, the 11th gen is still in the warehouse and they hope some people people haven't read about Alder Lake yet. So it make might work to put some paid infomercials around. There should be always hope, you know. You may also wish to consider the Lenovo ThinkPad P17 This sort of contrast achieved by crude local dimming of merely regions is barely better than the advertised contrast of projectors with dynamic iris In all fairness, neither would the miniLED display in situations where the dynamic iris would work.
Is there any reason why laptops can't have one power plug at each side? Seems a very practical feature, and not expensive, for sure. Apple does on their MBP line. I like the idea of using USB C to charge. Yeah is there any reason why smartphones can't have the 3. If D65 is your target white point then K would be considered too warm too yellow , not too cool too blue. Which, yes, is counterintuitive if looking at the numerical temperatures. The latter is pretty much standard on consumer displays, and not a bad reference point for photo work.
Apple's laptop displays have long had a native color temp of around K. A warmer temp is preferable for prepping prints that will be displayed under warmer indoor lighting conditions, which is why I calibrate my wide-gamut display at D A better comparison would be against Dell's new Alienware X15 R2 laptop. So what is the battery life and how does it compare to the new M1 Max or M1 Pro? I saw other charts for performance, but I must have missed this one. As a laptop, I would think this would be pretty important, otherwise it's just an all-in-one desktop.
As a Windows guy: MacBook all the way. Right out of the box i could edit anything from 4k to 8k without a hitch. Plus battery life is decent. I actually also have an rtx laptop and I mainly just use it for legacy software and games. The MacBook is unbeatable for most creative tasks. I ordered a fully-specced Macbook Pro Max 16" a month ago and will have to wait another month for it to be delivered. Damn supply chains How does that happen?
And how is it not even mentioned once? How can someone write an article and claim that this last-gen model is the fastest currently on the market? Battery life is awful on the Msi system as well. MrTintin We definitely have to wait for more laptops and more reputable reviews. It will be interesting to see this in a more equivalent comparison like an XPS The question is just how much power they need to do so.
On the desktop the performance improvements in those apps are low when moving from 11th to 12th gen intel - so unlikely to come lose to the m1max. MrTintin Where did you even find comparisons for capture one vs the m1 max? Especially since capture one is extremely dependent on the GPU. In that case as seen in the above benchmarks the m1max is overall faster than the rtx Close with imports and the m1max much faster in exports. Even if you take the biggest difference.
Which is when exporting. And for other stuff like importing the difference between 28min import for the fastest M1 Max, and 33 min import for the mbp is a joke. Same for the 1min 8sec vs 1min 12sec for a HDR merge. One of our favourite things about Micro Four Thirds is the variety of tiny, sharp lenses.
