And still a bit bass light which is a bummer. I use them mainly with an iPod Classic and an iPhone 4. The iPhone drives them better than the iPod which is a drag as Gb of space is useful when you have a large music collection.

If you add a headphone amplifier and a good cable that comes straight out of the port on the iPod then you get the best of all worlds. Then they show you what they can really do. The dynamics go really big, the detail extends even further and they show a clean pair of heels to most other 'phones. I also use Sennheiser HDs and the Etys sound great even against that competition.

Now than, about buds I use either the flanged buds or the sponge ones. They both work well but prolonged listening can make my ears hurt so I bough some Comply s, medium size and they are super comfy. But I reckon the bass is better with the Etymotic originals.

Build quality is very good indeed. These are NOT going to fall to bits, the cable is high quality and rugged, if a bit microphonic. Would I buy a third set if these go walkabouts? I would love something that has all of the plus points of the Etys, but with really powerful bass. Maybe top end Shures would do it. Or ATCs, but you are talking much more serious money. Use with a headphone amp if possible. I use a Meier Audio Porta Corda which uses a 9v battery and can go louder and cleaner than anything an iPod or iPhone can manage.

Look at it this way, with an iPod, headphone amp and the Etys, music sounds great. If you spend a lot of time with an iPhone or Pod, these will serve you well and last a lot longer than most of the competition. This is my third Etymotic product: the first was a pair of 6i's, which were excellent but a little on the bright side. Later I invested in the ER-4P, which may seem like an expensive gilding of the lily, but the investment was well worth it.

Like the previous reviewer, I lost or had stolen this pair, but I missed them so much I had to replace them. Now I won't let them out of the house, and the 6i's pair up very well with my Sony Walkman for outdoors. I have subsequently added a gizmo to convert the ER-4P's to the ER-4S, with even more accuracy of sound, but with a bass roll-off, so I can take my pick, depending on my choice of music. There might be other IEM that can do certain things better, but ER4 is still one of the most revealing, detailed while neutral sounding IEM you can ever listen to. However, you can pick up a 10yrs-old ER4 and it will still feel almost identical to a brand new one. The simplicity of the design also means there are very few things that can go wrong on an ER4, though degradation due to wear and tear is still unavoidable. The good news is Etymotic has built up a reputation on great customer service.

An old trick is to lubricate the tri-flanges with some baby oil the no extra additive kind a few days before usage.

Beware that you should only apply baby oil on the flange where it makes contact with skin but not on the tube of the tri-flange. This trick should help to break the tri-flanges in faster and provide a more comfortable fit early on. I think the answer can be both yes and no. While technically speaking, the flat, neutral Ety sound can be a representation of how sound is ought to be reproduced; the common trend among headphone manufacturers is however to EQ the missing part of the sound and makes it more engaging in order to recreate the speaker-like listening experience.

Etymotic on the other hand is perhaps more interested in the proper listening, or the accuracy of their sound, and less interested in the tactual compensation. Analytical and fairly bright but not harsh, extremely resolving and fast while remain very neutral, flat and cold across the whole frequency range. Bass remains very tight, impactful while still lacks a good body — though not as obvious as in 4P due to the more neutral presentation.

Instruments separation is great, very decent air and okay depth reproduction which means the soundstage is about average. Granted it is not a sound for everyone, it is still has one of the top spot among some of the more expensive new comers. Though I do find ER4S to sound a little better, the more practical thing to do will be to get the 4P and an extra aftermarket adapter.

This way you can have two IEM in one package, especially consider that they do sound different enough to worthwhile. A Sonic Diamond is awarded to ER4S for its outstanding value though the rating will be even higher if not for the requirement of dedicated amping. It's nice to see Etys getting credit for their tremendous value. I've owned a pair for years ER4s. One of my drivers went out, and I moved on.

They are very similar but with less brightness possibly more sibilent , very detailed, musical and neutral. And with an extremely reasonable price tag. If anyone wants an amp for the Ety ER4P, this amp and some other Xin's have a P to S converter in the amp along with a bass boost that's tuned specifically for the Ety along with crossfeed.

Basically, the amp is Xin tuning the Etys as close to perfection as Xin felt was possible. My amp isn't for sale, but it's worth checking out if you see them pop up and you are an Ety user. I am and always will be a fan of Etys. They did a tremendous job. This makes for comfortable listening in noisy environments and also ensures practically no music leaks out to annoy others. One feature we've found consistently with Etymotic models is that they are incredibly fussy about positioning in the ear.

It takes both experimentation and practice to get this right and until one does the sound is frankly horrid, all upper midrange and with little detail. Once the perfect fit has been achieved, though, everything changes dramatically, so persevere! It may say something about other in-ear headphones that even this 'enhanced bass' model didn't seem remarkably bass-rich, though comparison with over-ear headphones did suggest it's just a shade lifted. There is also a slight lift in the presence region, but what's most noticeable about the ER-4P is the extraordinary amount of detail it reveals about recordings.
